Herbarium Plant Specimens

A herbarium is a collection of plant specimens preserved for future research. Herbaria are used to identify and classify different plant specimens.

The three specimens on display are from a large collection of around 1600 preserved plants held by the museum. These three plants have been chosen for display this month because they were collected during the month of May in 1890. We can see therefore, the type of plants that were growing locally at this time of year over 120 years ago.

All of the specimens have been beautifully preserved and recorded. The information recorded by the collector is useful in determining how plant life has changed in the local area since 1890.

The plants on display include Chickweed collected at Neilsland in Hamilton and Sandwort and Meadow Saxifrage collected at Allanton.
