Councillors
The people of South Lanarkshire elect the councillors. There are currently 67 councillors covering 20 wards – so everyone in South Lanarkshire has either three or four councillors to represent them. You can find who your ward councillors are by inserting your address into Locate it.
Councillors are responsible for agreeing the council's plans and policies and deciding how the council's budget should be spent. To manage and deliver services, South Lanarkshire employs a paid staff of more than 15,000 people.
Councillors serve the people of their ward and they also have a wider duty to promote the public interest. To do this they have regular contact with the people through meetings, or you can phone, write or email. Some councillors also hold surgeries at set times each month.
Councillors are paid a salary for their work and also receive some allowances which are published every year - please download a Summary of Members Remuneration.
By law, all councillors are required to register certain categories of interest, financial and otherwise. Details of individual councillors' entries are held in the Register of Interests which is located at Council HQ and are also available for inspection electronically on our Councillors and Committees website.
