Ice rink given ICG 2011 makeover

East Kilbride ice rink has been given a colourful - and sporty - makeover to mark 500 days until Lanarkshire hosts the International Children's Games in August 2011.

The interior wall of the 50m x 25m rink has been completely wrapped in a Lanarkshire 2011 International Children's Games graphic showing Athens 2009 gold medallist Mhairi Hendry accompanied by the message 'Lanarkshire welcomes the world!'

Councillor Michael McCann, joint chair of the Lanarkshire 2011 International Children's Games, said: "The ice rink is looking fabulous with its new ICG cladding. More than 3000 people - mainly young people - will see these adverts for Lanarkshire 2011 every week and these are the very people we want to reach.

"Between now and the Games we want to generate as much awareness and excitement about the Games as possible and the ice rink advertising will be another step towards reaching a large number of young people.

"The signage is very eye-catching and we want it to inspire more young people to get involved in sport. It's vital we use every opportunity to spread the word about the Games and the legacy they will leave for young people throughout Lanarkshire for years to come.

"We want the legacy of the Games to act as an inspiration to young people to get involved in sports at grassroots level and enjoy all of the associated benefits this involves - improving health, boosting confidence and self-belief and motivating them to achieve their ambitions."
