Taxi or private hire car driver's licence

All vehicles operating as a taxi or private hire car need to be licensed. You can view our film about driving taxis and private hire cars on YouTube.

How to apply

You can apply online or fill out a taxi/private hire car driver's application form and submit it to your local Licensing and Registration office.

If you already have a licence and want to substitute the designated vehicle you can use the substitute vehicle licence form. You can also do this online.

Renewals

Renewal fees for Taxi or private hire car driver licences can be paid in instalments online. To do this you need to know your reference number and then use the online payment form to complete the payment. See the guide on how to work out your reference number for more information.

You also need to fill in the licence application form as well as submitting a payment because making the payment on its own will not be considered as renewal of your current licence. Your application form must be received by us within 48 hours of making your payment.

If you have any questions please contact your local licensing and registration office.

How the application is dealt with

It is in the public interest that we process your application before it can be granted so you will not get tacit consent.

If you haven't heard from us within 28 days please contact Licensing and Registration Services and we will let you know about your application's progress.

You must bring proof of identification when you collect your documents.

If someone else is collecting them for you, they must bring something in writing from you stating that you give your permission. This must be signed by you and give the details of the person who is collecting your documents. The signature on the letter will be compared with the signature on the application form. We will not accept an email.

Can anyone object?

Once we have your application there is a 28-day objection period. Your application will be copied and sent to Strathclyde Police for any comments or objections they may have.

How much does it cost?

  • taxi new grant - £149
  • private hire car new grant - £130
