Taxi/private hire driver route tests
You must pass a route test to get a taxi or private hire driver’s licence. The test checks your knowledge of the local area so you can take passengers safely and quickly.
Book a test
Tests take place weekly at the Council Offices, Almada Street, Hamilton, ML3 0AA.
You can take the test as many times as you need. Each test costs £36.86.
Bring photo ID and sign a declaration on the day.
What the test involves
The test has 25 multiple‑choice questions. Each question has four possible answers.
You must get at least 20 correct to pass.

You should know key locations in the area you plan to work in, including:

- train stations
- schools and libraries
- pubs and public buildings
- council offices
