Tolerable standards in housing
Our Environmental Health Services can check if a house is in significant breach of the Scottish Government's tolerable standards. If your house needs work done to bring it up to these standards we provide a 25% flat rate grant of the approved costs. We'll only provide a grant (subject to budget availability) for the following works:
- structural instability where an independent report shows risks of partial/total collapse
- where there is an inadequate supply of drinking water
- the first time installation of an internal toilet
- Foul water drainage - cesspool upgrades
Housing may give financial help with a grant or loan for the remaining costs if you would have severe difficulty in paying for them yourself. We'll assess your income, including savings and home equity and your expenditure.
We won't normally give financial help if you:
- bought the property knowing its condition meaning to developing it
- removed existing standard amenities
- haven't lived in the house for at least two years
If we decide that you qualify for financial help from our hardship fund, you'll be placed on a waiting list which is based on priority need and not first-come, first-served.
