Parking on public roads
Where you can park
You can usually park on a public road if there are no parking restrictions and you are not blocking the road, pavement or access for others.
New pavement parking legislation came into force in January 2025. You must keep pavements clear for people walking, using wheelchairs or pushing prams.
Enforcement and fines
If a vehicle causes an obstruction, Police Scotland can issue a fixed penalty notice.
We deal with parking only where there are parking restrictions, such as bus or taxi lanes.
Report a problem
If a vehicle is blocking the road or pavement, contact Police Scotland on 101 for non‑emergencies.
You can park on a public road as long as there are no traffic regulations in place and you aren't obstructing anything.
