Roads in winter
What we do
We make sure that main roads are safe and clear to use.
But, its not practical or affordable to grit all roads and footpaths. No councils can do this.
We grit about 45% of our roads when ice or snow is forecast. This is similar to what other local authorities do.
We also grit main footpaths in town centres when ice or snow is forecast. If there has been a lot of snow we will clear and grit other main footpaths. Generally, though footpaths in residential areas will not be gritted.
This year we've put our usual preparations in place, plus a number of extras. We've stored more salt than last year and replaced a number of our gritters.
We can call on our fleet of 43 gritters, 55 snowploughs, one snowblower, 22 lorries, 13 tractors and six loaders. Our road workers use these to salt the roads, clear snow and keep road and footpaths maintained by us in a safe condition.
