Make a claim for road or pavement damage
Before making a claim
If you believe we are responsible for damage to your vehicle, you can make a claim.
Check who maintains the road
Check if we maintain the road. We do not look after:
- M74/A74
- A702 (Dolphinton to Abington)
- A725
- A726 (Birniehill roundabout to Peel Park roundabout)
See trunk roads and motorways for contact details.
How to make a successful claim
To make a successful claim, you must show that we were negligent in maintaining the road or footpath.
This means you need clear evidence of:
- the defect (such as a pothole)
- the damage or injury caused
- how we failed to act
Consider claiming through your insurer
If your vehicle has significant damage, you should consider claiming through your motor insurance.
This may:
- be quicker
- avoid needing repair estimates
- be handled directly by your insurer
If your insurer believes we are responsible, they may claim the cost from us, including your excess.
Think before you claim
All claims are investigated carefully.
- investigation takes time and resources
- compensation is paid from public funds
- decisions are made based on evidence and legal responsibility
What to do next
- contact the correct authority for excluded roads
- check our safety inspection procedures and guidance manual.
- check your evidence
- contact your insurer or
- submit a claim with us
