Report a dangerous building

When to report a dangerous building

Report a building if you think it may be unsafe or could pose a risk to a person in or around the property, for example, if it:

  • could collapse or partially collapse
  • has loose masonry, roof coverings, or structural elements
  • has been affected by fire, storm damage, or impact

How to report a dangerous building

If there is an immediate risk to public safety, report it straight away.

  • 0303 123 1015 (Monday to Thursday, 8.45am to 4.45pm, Friday, 8.45am to 4.15pm)
  • 0800 24 20 24 (outwith office hours)

What we will do

We treat reports of dangerous buildings as a priority and investigate them as quickly as possible.

We will assess the risk and, where necessary, take action to protect occupants and the public.

Where possible, we will allow the owner to carry out the required work. If they do not, we may carry out the minimum work needed to make the building safe and recover the costs.

If further action is required, we may serve a Dangerous Buildings Notice. This requires the owner to carry out specified works within a set timescale.

If the owner does not comply, we may carry out the work and recover the costs.

When formal enforcement action results in a Dangerous Notice, the details will be noted on our online Building Standards Register.
