Non-dependant deductions from Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction

What is a non-dependant?

A non-dependant is someone over the age of 18 years who lives in your home but is not your partner, joint tenant, or lodger.

This could be:

  • an adult son or daughter
  • a relative or friend

How does this affect my Housing Benefit/Council Tax Reduction?

If you have a non-dependant living with you, your Housing Benefit/Council Tax Reduction may be reduced by a certain amount each week:

  • the amount your Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction is reduced by depends on the circumstances of the person living with you and how much income they have.
  • if the non-dependant is working, the amount that is deducted depends on the level of their gross earnings.

Circumstances in which there is no deduction

1. Where the non-dependant is:

  • under 18 years of age.
  • in full-time education or on youth training schemes
  • in receipt of Pension Credit

2. Where the person claiming benefit/reduction or their partner is:

  • registered blind.
