Starting a new food business
Registration of a food business
If you run a food business for more than five days in any five consecutive weeks you are legally required to register with Environmental Services. You need to tell us about any premises used for storing, selling, distributing or preparing food. Food businesses, including market stalls, delivery vehicles, food vans and portacabins must be registered.
You can register by filling out the Food business registration form. You must do this at least 28 days before opening.
Once we have your application we will put your business details on our register and we'll let you know by letter. Once registered you must notify us of any changes such as a new owner.
It is in the public interest that we process your application before it can be granted. If you haven't heard from us within 28 days contact Environmental Services and we will tell you about your application's progress.
There is no fee to register, however, if you want a copy of our register containing all food businesses the costs are as follows:
- full register £191
- category extract £39
- single extract £7
Please note credit card payments are now subject to a surcharge of 1.23% (since April 2013).
If you require further help or information please contact Environmental Services.
