Bonfires and fireworks

If you’re worried about a bonfire in your area, contact us so we can look into it. Please tell us the exact address or location of the fire.

We will assess the situation and take action if needed.

Bonfires and the law

It is against the law to light or build a fire in a public place if it:

• puts people in danger
• causes alarm or distress
• risks damage to property

This is covered under Section 56 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982.

Report deliberate fires

If you think a fire has been started on purpose, you can contact Crimestoppers Scotland on 0800 555 111.
You do not need to give your name, and you will not be asked to attend court.

Report fly-tipping and fire risks

Dumped rubbish can quickly turn into dangerous bonfires, especially during the autumn and fireworks season. Fly-tipping is a criminal offence.

If you see:

• rubbish being dumped
• a build-up of waste or items that could catch fire

Please report fly-tipping to us as soon as possible so we can arrange removal and reduce the risk.

What you can do

• report bonfires early so we can act quickly
• share clear details about the location
• avoid adding waste to bonfire sites

Taking action early helps keep your area safe.
