Examples of self-directed support

All our information pages on Self-Directed Support are undergoing a refresh as a result of the implementation of the Social Care Self-Directed Support (Scotland) Act 2013.

Self-directed Support (SDS) doesn't always rely on traditional, paid services. Finding out what is out there in the community is a key part of the approach.

Some examples of self-directed support are:

  • funding a short-break where the service-user is supported and the carer enjoys a break
  • employing a personal assistant instead of using a care agency to offer greater flexibility
  • buying equipment to support identified needs
  • funding a contribution towards adaptations
