Council tax - ways to pay

Payments are due in 10 monthly instalments between April and January and are due on the first day of the month, unless you are paying by direct debit. Please note that we can't accept payments by American Express or Electron.

You can pay in the following ways:

Online

Payment can be made online by using our secure online payment service. To pay online please have to hand:

  • Your 9 digit council tax reference number
  • Your account name; this is the name on your council tax card or bill
  • Your credit card details

Direct debit

Payments are taken directly from your bank on your choice of payment date - 1st, 7th, 14th, 21st or 28th of the month. To sign up for direct debit, call the processing centre on 0303 123 1011. Alternatively, you can print off and complete a Direct debit council tax form.

Phone

Pay by credit or debit card over the phone, please contact our 24-hour payments call centre on 0303 123 1005.  Please note that we cannot accept payments by American Express or Electron.

Standing order

Please contact your bank to set up a standing order. Payments can be made to the Council's bank account sort code 83-22-26, account number 00146574. Please quote your 9 digit account reference from your Council Tax bill

Online banking

Payments can be made direct to the Council's bank account sort code 83-22-26, account number 00146574. Please quote your 9 digit account reference from your Council Tax bill.

Salary deduction

If any member of your household is a South Lanarkshire Council employee, Council tax can be paid direct from their salary by contacting the Audit and Development Team.

Post

Send a crossed cheque, made payable to South Lanarkshire Council, to the Central Cash Office, Brandon Gate, 1 Leechlee Road , Hamilton , ML3 0XB. Please write your name, address and council tax reference number on the back of the cheque.

In person

Payments can be made at your local Council Cash Office using your council tax payment card. Payments by cash, cheque and credit/debit card are accepted. Payments can be made at your local Post Office or Paypoint using your council tax payment card.

Lost payment card

For a lost payment card you can complete and submit a request for a new payment card using our online form or you can contact the Benefit and Council Tax call centre and a new card will be ordered for you. Please continue to pay your council tax while waiting for a new card by quoting your reference number at your local cash office.
