How we prepare for emergencies

What we do to keep people safe and informed

We prepare for emergencies so we can support people in South Lanarkshire if something serious happens. This could include severe weather, flooding, major accidents or other large‑scale incidents. While we are not an emergency service like the police or fire service, we play an important role in helping communities stay safe and recover.

During an emergency, we update this website with the latest information and post updates on our social media channels. Normally, our accounts are monitored during office hours, but during an emergency, we arrange extra cover so information can be shared more quickly.

You can also find emergency contact details on our website, including how to reach social work services and report urgent housing repairs.

How we manage emergencies

We have a Corporate Response Group made up of senior staff from across our services. The group is led by our Resilience Team and meets to plan, prepare and respond to emergencies.

Emergencies can happen with little or no warning. They can be caused by natural events or human activity, and their impact can vary. What they often have in common is the potential to disrupt everyday life and affect people’s wellbeing.

To prepare, we work closely with:

  • emergency services
  • the NHS
  • voluntary organisations
  • other partner agencies

Each organisation has a clear role so support can be provided quickly and effectively.

What we focus on during an emergency

Our main aim is to protect people and support recovery. We do this by:

  • providing help to the community, such as shelter, transport, information and advice
  • restoring services that have been disrupted
  • supplying staff, equipment, buildings or specialist support when needed
  • leading longer‑term community recovery work

Understanding local risks

The Community Risk Register explains the main risks in this area and how they could affect you. It also shows how you can prepare and stay informed. The West of Scotland Community Risk Register is available on the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service website.
