To vote in any election you need to be registered to vote.

You can watch our film about Registering to vote on YouTube.

Every year, letters are sent to every home in Lanarkshire asking people to check the list of people registered to vote at their address.

If someone has moved away from the address, you can take their name off the register. If someone has moved in to the address, their name should be added.

Or if you have a young person of 16 or 17 living there - you can add in their name and date of birth. That way, they can vote at any elections that take place when they turn 18.

Even if there is no change, you should follow the instructions to confirm the details are correct.

If you don't remember receiving a letter and you are not sure you are on the register, contact the Electoral Registration Officer or ask to see the register for your street at the local library.

What happens if you move house

You should contact the Electoral Registration Officer. Your name can then be added to the Register of Electors for your new address.

If you are a student and away from home, you can be registered at home and at your term time address - but you can only vote at one of them.

Who can register to vote?

You can register to vote if

  • you live in Scotland
  • you are a British or qualifying Commonwealth or European Union Citizen
