Ways to vote

In person

You can vote in person on the day of the election. Your polling card, which you will receive before the election, will indicate your polling station which is usually a school or a public hall near where you live.

At the polling station, the staff will check your name and address. A short film has been made about what to do at the polling station which can now be watched on the council's YouTube channel.

Before the elections make sure you are registered on the register of electors list. You can also watch a short film about how to Register to Vote.

Polling stations are open from 7.00am to 10.00pm.

By post

If you can't go to the polling station or will be on holiday on election day, it might be more suitable for you to vote by post. You can also choose to vote by post simply because it's more convenient for you.

If you want to apply to vote by post, you need to fill in a postal voting application form which you must sign carefully as the signature will be compared with the one on the statement which accompanies your postal vote - if they don't match your vote will not be counted.

You have to return the form within the 11 working days before the elections (if you are living overseas, please allow extra time for delivery). Thereafter your postal vote will be sent to you approximately six working days before the election.

Proxy voting

Proxy voting means that you nominate a person that you know and trust to vote for you on polling day.

If you want to vote by proxy, you have to fill in an application to vote by proxy. The deadline is six working days before the elections.

You can watch a film about Postal and Proxy Voting here.
