Better homes: Thriving communities

South Lanarkshire Local Housing Strategy 2012-2017

Housing is one of our most basic needs. Having somewhere that is safe and warm provides a firm basis for all aspects of life. So good housing not only contributes to a good quality of life but also affects our health and general well being. It is also important for South Lanarkshire's economy that a good choice of housing is available to attract new companies and their employees.

Although people are generally satisfied with their housing and the areas in which they live, not everyone lives in an ideal situation.

Some people live in overcrowded conditions, or in housing that is difficult to heat or not suitably adapted to cope with their age, disability or other particular needs. Others may be unable to find housing they can afford or have concerns about their local neighbourhood.

The Local Housing Strategy (LHS) is relevant to anyone who lives in or is moving to our area. Its purpose is to assess the housing situation across South Lanarkshire and look at how we can meet demand and improve the quality of housing over the next five years. The LHS sets out our housing priorities and how we plan to achieve them.

When preparing the LHS we consulted widely and received considerable feedback from a wide range of people and organisations. Thank you to everyone who contributed their views. You can see how this feedback has been used in finalising the LHS in the Consultation Report.

We also carried out assessments of the impact the LHS may have on communities (Equalities Impact Assessment) and the environment (Strategic Environmental Assessment).
