South Lanarkshire Council

South Lanarkshire Council provides services for 308,000 people and looks after a large area within central and southern Scotland.

Our larger towns are East Kilbride, Scotland's first and most successful new town, the burghs of Cambuslang and Rutherglen and the county town of Hamilton where the Council has its headquarters. Our beautiful countryside includes the Clyde Valley and the market towns of Lanark, Carluke and Biggar.

We have 16,250 employees (6000 working part-time) and our gross annual budget is around £1billion.

We have been working hard to ensure our area is thriving. Since the last council elections in May 2007, we have set out our plans for the next four years in our new Council Plan Connect, which builds on the success of FourCast, our last four-year plan.

There's a great deal more we want to achieve.

We have six main priorities. They are to improve the quality of our Council houses and ensure more affordable homes are built; to develop new services for the growing numbers of older people; to improve the environment and make sure our towns and villages are safe, attractive places to be; to improve our road network; to continue to modernise our schools and to encourage sustainable development.

Connect - Council Plan 2007-2011 (2MB PDF) (this document will open in a new window) was approved unanimously by the full Council in October 2007.

And together with North Lanarkshire Council and New Lanarkshire Ltd, we have won our bid to host the 2011 International Children's Games.
