Every four years, the people of South Lanarkshire elect the councillors, the 67 men and women who represent them on the Council. The area is divided into 20 wards, each with three our four councillors.
At the head of this political structure is the Council Leader, who chairs the council's Executive Committee which meets every four weeks and makes recommendations to meetings of the full council on key policies, the budget, council tax and rent levels.
Every councillor attends full meetings of the council, chaired by the Provost. Each councillor also serves on a number of committees. These are outlined in full on our Councillors and Committees pages. The political structure and composition of the council elected on 3 May 2007 is shown below.
The chief adviser to the Council is the Chief Executive, Archie Strang. He leads the council's management team which includes the Executive Director of each of our seven departments - Community Resources; Corporate Resources; Education Resources; Enterprise Resources; Finance and Information Technology Resources; Housing and Technical Resources and Social Work Resources.
