Justice and Youth Justice

Social Work plays a major role in the criminal justice and youth justice systems, from preparing background reports for the courts to tackling the underlying behaviour that can lead people into constant brushes with the law.

Studies on youth crime have highlighted that custodial sentences do not have a lasting impact for re-offending and suggest that challenging community programmes would better address the problem for both victims as well as offenders.

Social Work's aim is to make the community a safer place by helping offenders to change their behaviour and identifying situations where someone may pose a high risk.
