Waste and recycling

Household waste

We empty bins from more than 142,000 households a week collecting general waste and recyclables on alternate weeks. There is a major drive to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and to achieve set targets we must recycle more. From July 2006 - June 2007, South Lanarkshire Council recycled or composted more than 75,000 tonnes of waste - the second highest total in Scotland. Our current recycling rate is 37% and this financial year's target is 38%.

Street cleaning

Keeping the streets clean is a major priority for us and we work closely with Keep Scotland Beautiful. Litter squads work seven days a week targeting town centres and main thoroughfares. Keep Scotland Beautiful monitors our cleanliness and South Lanarkshire has consistently achieved scores in the 'excellent' category.

Trade waste

The Council no longer provides a commercial waste collection service. A number of private waste disposal companies operate in South Lanarkshire and can provide a quote for a regular collection service. These include Viridor Enviroscot, Biffa Waste Services, Patersons Waste Disposal and Shanks Waste Solutions.
