Members of the European Parliament (MEPs)
Members of the European Parliament play an active role in drafting legislation which has an impact on the daily lives of citizens in EU countries: For example, on environmental protection, consumer rights, equal opportunities, transport, and the free movement of workers, capital, services and goods. The European Parliament also has joint power with the Council of Europe over the annual budget of the European Union.
The European Parliament currently has 785 members. The Scottish region of the Parliament has seven members. This will drop to six at the next elections. Scotlands MEPs all represent the whole country and you can contact any or all of them with issues of interest or concern. Members are elected for five years and elections are next due in June 2009.
