Low Parks Museum

Low Parks Museum is housed in historically important buildings, which were once part of the Duke of Hamilton's estate. The 18th century Assembly Room, with its original plasterwork and musicians' gallery, is a rare survival and key feature of the buildings.

The museum shows the history and development of South Lanarkshire, and how life in its communities was shaped by farming, weaving and coalmining.

One of our most popular displays tells the fascinating, but perhaps tragic, story of Hamilton Palace, once claimed to be the finest non - royal residence in Europe, but demolished in the 1920s and now almost lost from memory.

Visitors can also trace the 300 - year history of The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) regiment, raised and disbanded in Douglas, and fiercely proud of its unique position as Scotland's only rifle regiment.

In addition to these core displays, there are two large temporary exhibition galleries, which allow us to introduce new topics and objects on a regular basis.

Another popular attraction is our Mezzanine Cafe where you can enjoy finest home baking or choose from a wide range of snacks, whilst soaking up the relaxing atmosphere of the museum.

Low Parks Museum has been awarded five star status in the VisitScotland grading scheme, confirming its position as one of the top visitor attractions in South Lanarkshire.

The Assembly Room perfectly captures the elegant mood of the 18th century and provides a lovely venue for weddings, small concerts, recitals and seminars.

Please view our Low Parks Museum photo gallery and exhibitions photo gallery for a snapshot of what you can see during a visit.

Our current temporary exhibition is The The Hamilton Story.

You can also experience our virtual tours of the museum gallery and read our Weddings at Low Parks Museum (1.2MB PDF) (this document will open in a new window)
