Secondary Schools Modernisation Programme

Our groundbreaking schools modernisation programme has changed the face of education in South Lanarkshire.

All of our 19 secondary schools have been rebuilt or modernised, 17 have been completely rebuilt including two schools for children with additional support needs, and two other schools have been substantially refurbished.

The new buildings are accessible to all and the designs are of the highest standard, providing a stimulating and innovative learning environment, in sustainable buildings, sitting on landscaped campuses.

The "street" element is core to the design of all the new schools and to their functionality, with the flexibility of this space offering significant opportunities for a variety of uses - assembly, dining, circulation, social interaction, theatre productions, formal events and displays.

Buildings have also been designed to promote and encourage community use with greatly improved indoor and outdoor sports facilities providing a new focus for the community.

In the Hamilton area, pupils moved into the new Holy Cross High School in August 2007. The new Calderside Academy in Blantyre opened in January 2008 and pupils moved into the brand new John Ogilvie High School in August 2008. Uddingston Grammar School was occupied by pupils in January 2009, whilst pupils and staff occupied the new Larkhall Academy in August 2009.

In East Kilbride, St. Andrew's and St. Bride's High School and Duncanrig Secondary School opened in August 2007. Calderglen and Sanderson High Schools opened in February 2008, whilst Strathaven Academy was occupied by pupils in August 2009.

In the Rutherglen and Cambuslang area, the new Cathkin High and Rutherglen High opened their doors to pupils in October 2008 and the new Trinity High School opened in August 2009.

The two fully refurbished schools included in the Secondary Schools Modernisation Programme - Hamilton Grammar School and Stonelaw High School were also completed and opened to pupils in August 2009.

More than 19,000 secondary pupils are enjoying life in these modern, bright and inspiring buildings.
