Homelessness

Photo:Council policy document on homeless

Every year, we give help and advice to hundreds of people who have lost or are at risk of losing their home.

We can offer advice, help and support to people in this situation including:

- free advice and information;
- preventing homelessness where possible;
- helping people find somewhere to live;
- providing temporary housing if this is needed;
- supporting people in their tenancy or temporary housing.

If you, or anyone you know, might be homeless or at risk of becoming homeless please contact your Local Housing Office. If you need somewhere to stay and our offices are closed, please phone our emergency Freephone number 0800 242024 or Minicom (text service for deaf people) 0800 027 1001 .

You have some rights by law when you make a homelessness application, including the right to:
- make a homelessness application and have your circumstances assessed;
- temporary housing if you need it;
- advice and help to find somewhere to live, or in some cases, a permanent offer of housing; and
- appeal any decision made on your application.

These are explained in some more detail by clicking on the links below and also in the Our homelessness service (183 KB PDF) booklet. (This document will open in a new window.)

These rights are set out by the Housing (Scotland) Act 1987, the Housing (Scotland) Act 2001 and the Homelessness etc (Scotland) Act 2003. As well as the law, we must also take account of the Code of Guidance on Homelessness, which explains how we should deal with homelessness applications.
