Local Housing Allowance -
bedroom entitlement calculator

If you are a tenant of a private landlord (rather than the Council or housing association) your benefit entitlement is related to the number of rooms you need as well as your income. Before using the Housing benefit and council tax calculator - you need to work out the number of bedrooms you are entitled to claim for and the maximum rate for that number of rooms in the South Lanarkshire area. Once you know this figure, known as your Local Housing Allowance (LHA) Rate - you can use the Housing and council tax benefits calculator to estimate what benefits you may be due.

Select the circumstances which describe you (and your family, if any) on the lists below, and click on the "Calculate" button.

Bedroom entitlement calculator for your Local Housing Allowance category

In each area there will be six or seven weekly LHA rates (in categories A to G), so before you look up your weekly LHA amount you need to know your LHA category and this depends by the number of bedrooms appropriate for your household (you, your family and others who live with you). So to find the right number of bedrooms for you, just select the circumstances which describe you (and your family, if any) on the lists below and let the program work it out.

Otherwise, use the boxes below to describe the number of people in your slightly more complex household and get an answer up to the maximum of 6 bedrooms.

and click to display the bedrooms for you

An explanation of the bedroom rules for the more complex household groups - one bedroom is allowed for each of the following "people units", counting each person only once, in the first group they match:

  1. A married couple or an unmarried couple who live together as husband and wife or same sex couples who have formed a civil partnership or are living as if they have formed a civil partnership.
  2. Someone who is 16 or over.
  3. Two children of the same sex who are younger than 16.
  4. Two children who are younger than 10.
  5. A child (a 'child' is someone under 16).

You should now go to the LHA information for tenants page to see the maximum amount of LHA you will be paid. You should take a note of this figure (you will need it to work out how much Housing Benefit you are due). then use the online services benefits calculator to estimate what benefits you may be due, or use your browser's "Back" button to return to the web page you just came from.
