Primary schools: Scottish Cycle Training Scheme
The Scottish Cycle Training Scheme was launched in South Lanarkshire in 2003 to replace the National Cycling Proficiency Scheme.
The scheme includes cycle maintenance, discipline guidelines, practical cycling activities, theoretical work and the importance of wearing helmets and other protective clothing.
A comprehensive teaching pack and other materials are provided by Road Safety Scotland for teachers, pupils and parents so children can learn at home as well as at school.
Teachers attend in-service training sessions which are carried out by our road safety team. A T-junction is also painted in every school playground in the area to help with training. Teachers are shown how to check the roadworthiness of bicycles and are asked to complete a Highway Code exam with the children.
Pupils complete eight practical lessons which will teach them basic control exercises, emergency stop, right and left turns from minor to major and major to minor roads and overtaking. Each manoeuvre incorporates safe looking, signalling skills and traffic awareness.
Classroom work covers the Highway Code, bike maintenance, safe journeys and environmental awareness.
