Biodiversity includes the whole variety of living things; plants, animals and microbes, and includes all the places where they're found. It is the diversity of life, from genes to whole ecosystems.

South Lanarkshire Biodiversity Partnership (SLBP) was established in 1997 as a local response to the internationally agreed Convention on Biological Diversity, signed by the United Kingdom government at the earth summit in Rio de Janeiro, 1992. The aim of the convention is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity (biodiversity) to the benefit of us all. As such, it is a key component of sustainable development. The Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004 places a statutory duty upon every public body to further the conservation of biodiversity and the SLBP contributes towards meeting this duty.
