44 young swimmers from 11-17 years of age took part in the Scottish Schools Swimming Championships at Tollcross recently. This was an increase of 6 on last year and they came home with a 13 medal haul comprising 5 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze.

Ross Leslie of Hamilton College took his first Scottish Schools gold in the 12 years and under 50 freestyle, finishing superbly touching out his Fife opponent by 13/100ths of a second. In the 17-19 years age groups Corrie Scott of Strathaven Academy and Ally Stirling of Stonelaw High were double winners. Corrie took the 200 IM in a new record time to add to her victory in the 100 breaststroke where she has set her sights on breaking that record next year. Ally dominated the 100 and 200 freestyle events from the start and was a clear winner on both occasions.
In the 17-19 years section there was considerable success for SL. Lindsay Bloomer, of Stonelaw High took silver in both the 100 and 200 freestyle missing gold in the shorter event by less than 0.2 of a second. Lanark Grammar had a trio of medallists in this age category. Victoria Gourlay took bronze in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Niall McLeod took silver in the 100 butterfly ahead of Ross McCafferty who finished 4th but Ross went on to take bronze later in the day in the 200 backstroke. Iona Campbell completed her Scottish Schools career with 4th in the 100 fly and 5th in the 200 IM while Allan Campbell (Calderside Academy) took 5th and 6th place respectively in the 100 and 200 backstroke. Caitlin McGowan of Uddingston Grammar was 5th in the 200 breaststroke ahead of Claire Wotherspoon of Stonelaw High who finished 8th and Claire also took 6th in the 200 fly. Ryan Doherty (Trinity High) finished 7th and 8th in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke respectively and Anthony Fletcher of the same school took 9th in the 200 fly.
The 15-16 years age group Euan Alston of Hamilton College was the only medallist taking silver in the 100 back and bronze in the 200 back. Connor Hughes of Holycross High was narrowly edged out of the medals finishing 4th in the 100 breaststroke and 6th in the 200 breaststroke while Michael Allison of Calderglen High was just outside the medals in both the 100 and 200 fly finishing 5th on both occasions. Jonathan Stuart of Calderside Academy was 5th and 7th in the 100 and 200 freestyle and his fellow pupil Grant Sheldon, was 8th in the 200 freestyle and 13th in the 200 fly. Kim Figgins of Strathaven Academy was 7th in the 200 fly and 11th over 100 metres while Rachel Clark of Uddingston Grammar was 9th in the 100 back and 11th over the longer distance. Jack Mollison (Calderglen High) was 12th in both his 100 and 200 backstroke events and Stuart Murray (Hamilton College) was 18th in the 200 IM.
The 13-14 years age group saw no medals but a string of good pb's and performances. Cameron Watkins of Biggar High took 4th in the 100 free and 11th in the 200 event. Jennifer Scott of Larkhall Academy was 7th and 8th in the 200 and 100 backstroke and Maya Andrew of Lanark Grammar was just behind in the 200 back finishing 9th to add to her 7th in the 200 fly. Cameron Park of Stonelaw High was 9th in the 200 breaststroke and 11th in the 100 breaststroke and in the corresponding girls events Lorna Gemmell of Lanark Grammar finished 10th and 14th respectively. Scott McCormick of Calderside Academy took 10th in the 100 breaststroke and 18th in the 200 metre event and Graeme McLean of Hamilton Grammar was 12th over 100 fly and 17th in the 200 IM. Fraser Ross (Cathkin High) was 14th in the 200 IM, and Emma Christie (Stonelaw High) took the same place in the 100 back while Connor Searle of Lanark Grammar completed a trio of 14th places in the 200 back.
In the 12 years and under section SL had several finalists. Olivia Jackson of Holcross High was pipped for a medal as she finished 4th in the 50 fly while Erin Holmes (West Coats Primary) improved on her heat swim to take 5th in the 50 backstroke and Adrienne Allan (Woodside Primary) was 8th in the 50 breaststroke. Colin Thomson (Kirkton Primary) took a well earned 6th in the 50 back and Angus Barr (Bent Primary) took 9th in the 50 freestyle while Ronan McElhinney (Hunter Primary) took 10th in the 50 breaststroke. Meg Finnon of St Hilary's primary was 13th in the 50 fly and Robyn Patrick (Robert Owen Memorial Primary) was 14th in the 50 back while her fellow pupil Cameron Black was 16th in the 50 fly. In 15th place were Alastair Gourlay of Kirkfieldbank Primary on backstroke, Katie Scott of Stonehouse Primary on freestyle and Cara Thomson of Our Lady of Lourdes Primary on breaststroke.
This year's performances saw an increase of medals, top 10 finishes and competitors.
