Major improvement works to improve the traffic flow in and around the Peacock Cross area of Hamilton get underway this weekend.

The £5million project is already well underway with a major part of the scheme, a new link road from Wellhall Road to Burnbank Road already created.

But the majority of work completed to date has had limited impact on the road network.

On Saturday 5 February resurfacing work will begin at the junction of Clydesdale St and Burnbank Road. Detailed diversions will be in place with two-way traffic lights manually operated. Depending on the weather, these works should be completed by Tuesday 8 February.

And on Saturday 19 February a section of Wellhall Road will be closed, from the junction of Peacock Drive to Peacock Cross, to allow for resurfacing work. Again, detailed diversions will be in place with two-way traffic lights manually operated. One of the diversions will include the use of the new link road. Although weather dependent it is anticipated this phase of the works will be complete by Tuesday 22 February.

The following Saturday (26 February) the next phase of works will begin with, as in previous weekends, detailed diversions and two-way traffic lights manually operated. Again, depending on the weather, it is hoped this phase will be completed by Tuesday 1 March.

More work will need to be carried out the following weekend (5 March) but it is expected this will have little effect on the flow of traffic, except for traffic travelling along Wellhall Road towards the town centre who will be required to use the new link road.

Councillor Chris Thompson, the chair of the council's Enterprise Resources Committee, said: "We apologise in advance for any inconvenience these works may cause. They are essential in allowing us to progress this vital project which will bring with it many benefits to the people of Hamilton.

"We are carrying out the majority of the work over weekends in a bid to minimise disruption.

"It should be noted that the work being carried out is dependant on the weather in terms of how long it takes us.

"We would advise any road users who are travelling in the area over these weekends to expect delays."

The Park and Ride at Peacock Cross is a joint project between the council and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT).
