Planning permission is being sought to extend the new Blackwood Primary School community wing.

The council plans to significantly extend the community wing to include sports facilities, to replace the now ageing Leisuredome, and also provide a new public library.

If planning permission is granted the new community wing will add a whole range of new facilities to the existing plans, including: a fitness suite, public library, meeting room, changing rooms, community office, storage rooms and 42 parking bays on the site of the current Blackwood Hall in addition to the 48 bay school car park.

A multi-purpose pitch will be designed to include tennis and will be available to the public out-with school hours. A planning application has also been submitted for a 7-a-side outdoor synthetic floodlit football pitch (which can be divided into 3 x 5 a-side pitches) which will be shared with the school.

If the go-ahead is given the overall spend on this fantastic new School and Community facility will be £11.5million.

The original plans were for a community room suitable for subdivisions, community kitchen and toilets with access to the following  school areas out with school times including school assembly hall/gym and stage, school dining room, changing areas and toilets, the multi-use pitch and the 48 bay school car park.

Work on the new primary school has now started and, together with the new community wing is scheduled to be ready for use in the autumn of 2012. The pitches and other external areas are scheduled to be completed by spring 2013.

When complete, the new community facility will be managed and operated on behalf of the council by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Ltd. Presentation boards for the public to view are being placed in the Leisuredome and other South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Ltd buildings in the local area.
