The amount of salt the council can store has been substantially increased thanks to the extension of two salt barns.

Hawbank Roads Depot in East Kilbride and Carnwath Roads Depot have both had their covered storage areas increased to 5800 tonnes of road salt, up from their previous capacities of 3100 tonnes each.

Councillor Chris Thompson, the chair of the council's Enterprise Resources Committee, said: "This work is a vital component of our strategy to increase our winter resilience.

"We had more than 35,000 tonnes of salt in stock at the start of winter, representing a substantial increase from the pre-winter stock levels of only 8000 tonnes four years ago."

The project cost £326,000 and the contractor was Border Construction Ltd.
