Club Ready

Pre-club -competitive swimming at South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture

Entry Criteria

Physical

  • Swim 200m on front as defined in curriculum (level 4)
  • Swim 100m on back as defined in curriculum (level 4)
  • Front crawl competent technique as defined in curriculum (level 4)
  • Back crawl competent technique as defined in curriculum (level 4)
  • Breaststroke competent technique as defined in curriculum (level 4)
  • Elementary butterfly technique as defined in curriculum (level 4)
  • Standing diving and jumping (pool depth permitting)
  • Advanced water skills

Psychological

  • Be part of a class
  • Swim in deep water
  • Able to perform a basic piece of work on own
  • Able to make small refinements to technique
  • Interested in progressing to competitive swimming club

Aim

To improve and maintain stroke technique over distance and develop basic training and race skills, producing a swimmer who is ‘Club Ready’.

Objectives

  • Advance swimming stamina in all four strokes whilst maintaining technique
  • Improve efficiency in all four strokes
  • To develop turn technique in all four strokes
  • Knowledge and understanding of club training practices

Content Areas  (Core aquatic skill area in bold)

  • Propulsion and streamlining – develop competitive start and turn technique in all four strokes
    a. Kick off the wall holding streamlined position, transition into stroke
    b. Dive entry holding streamlined glide, transitioning to stroke
  • Stroke technique/efficiency and endurance – develop stroke technique maintaining over a distance
    a. Frontcrawl – maintain competent technique tumble turn at the wall, building distance to 100 metres
    b. Backcrawl – maintain competent technique and timing, with tumble turn, legal touch and finish at the wall building distance to 100 metres
    c. Breaststroke – maintain good technique and timing, incorporating race skills building distance to 50 metres
    d. Butterfly – maintain technique and timing with legal stroke, turn and finish at the wall, building distance to 25 metres
  • Sculling – understand and progress the technique of incorporating sculling into the strokes
    a. Perform wrist up, flat wrist and wrist down sculling
    b. Scull by their side, on their back and feet first sculling
  • Club training competencies – develop an understanding of training skills
    a. Perform a piece of work on their own
    b. Use of training clock for starting, resting and timing single swims
    c. Introduce lane discipline; order, direction and overtaking
    d. Understand terminology
    e. Use of equipment; personal (e.g. goggles), turning flags, starting blocks etc
    f. Be aware of perceived effort – steady pace, acceleration and fast finish

Exit Criteria - Club Ready Swim

  • Swim 100 metres of Frontcrawl. Maintain efficient technique and incorporate race skills
  • Swim 100 metres of Backcrawl. Maintain efficient technique and incorporate race skills
  • Swim 50 metres of Breaststroke. Maintain efficient technique and incorporate race skills
  • Swim 25 metres of Butterfly. Maintain efficient technique and incorporate race skills
  • Attempt 100 metres Individual Medley incorporate race skills
  • Understand lane discipline and use of timing clock
