Store your mobility scooter safely

Do you use a mobility scooter?
Following updates to national fire safety guidance for sheltered housing and multi-storey buildings, we are currently undertaking a review of our buildings to identify how we can better support tenants to safely use and store mobility scooters.
Once this review is complete, new guidance will be issued to all tenants. Until then, tenants who currently use a scooter should take account of the following helpful advice:
Do not charge your scooter’s battery overnight. As with all chargeable appliances, fire safety guidance recommends that you unplug overnight to reduce any risk of overheating or fire while you are asleep.
Do not store your scooter in any designated building escape or evacuation routes. If it is stored in your own property, make sure it doesn’t block access in or out.
Do make sure you buy or lease the right type of scooter that meets your needs and storage space available. There are a range of different sizes and styles of scooters available, with some too large to store or manoeuvre inside.
If you have any questions or concerns about the safe storage, or charging, of mobility scooters, please speak to your local Housing Officer or Caretaker.
