Improvements underway for Active Travel routes
Published: Wednesday 7 September 2022
Work has started to improve Active Travel facilities in East Kilbride Town Centre.
Once completed the works will connect the Cornwall Street corridor to Churchill Avenue and provide new infrastructure on Churchill Avenue between the Queensway and Whitemoss Avenue/West Mains Road.
The key improvements will include a segregated cycle route, upgraded pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities on Churchill Avenue, as well as new planting and seating areas to boost the aesthetics of the corridor.
Chair the council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor Robert Brown, said: “The work taking place in East Kilbride is designed to make it easier to make the change to walking, wheeling and cycling.
“The Town Centre network is based upon an early priority vision developed as part of the East Kilbride Active Travel Study.
“This vision is that active travel will become the first preferred choice for everyday journeys and will be introduced to ensure easy access to safe, segregated routes from homes, schools and key amenities within the town.
“Funding for this work is from external sources and ring fenced for active travel projects. It should also be noted that the footway network is also improved with these types of projects.”
