Health and safety - the role of Environmental Services

Accident reporting

By law, businesses must report certain work‑related accidents, dangerous incidents and cases of work‑related illness to the Health and Safety Executive, as required by The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013.  This is known as RIDDOR reporting.

You must report things like:

  • serious injuries such as fractures or severe burns
  • injuries that keep an employee off work for more than seven days
  • injuries to members of the public that result in hospital treatment
  • certain work‑related diseases
  • dangerous incidents that could have caused serious harm

More details on the types of accidents you need to report can be found on the HSE Types of reportable incidents page.

How to make a RIDDOR Report

Most accidents can be reported online using the HSE RIDDOR forms. For fatal accidents or serious injuries involving workers, you can also phone 0345 300 9923.

If you employ ten or more people, you must also keep an accident book.
