Service AreaCommunity and Enterprise
Aims and ObjectivesThe Facilities Service Review was undertaken to provide efficiency savings for 2016/17 and this on-going at this time.
School meal prices increased in 2014/15 to £1.50. The Review Group proposal is to increase school meal prices to
£1.60 in April 2016. Currently, South Lanarkshire Council school meal prices are the lowest in Scotland. A 10p
increase should realise £0.216m.

The free school meal scheme will remain unchanged i.e all primary 1 - 3 are entitled to a free school meal and all low
income families or children in care who are entitled to a free school meal will still have access to the scheme so this
price change will not affect them.
ConclusionOver a decade the school meal prices in South Lanarkshire Council remained unchanged at £1.20.The school meals
prices increased in 2014/15 to £1.50 and are the lowest in Scotland.

Whilst we acknowledge there may be a negative impact of some users in the age category namely; Primary 4-7 and
Secondary school pupils (12-18), parents and carers. The impact is limited due to changes in government legislation in
January 2015, when the free school meal scheme extended to all primary 1 -3 children and in addition, does not affect
children and young people from low income famillies or in care who are entitled to a free school meal.

The full impact of this proposal will not fully be known until it is it is put in place, we will monitor the impact using the
Council's complaints procedure and school meal uptake levels.

Taking all of the above into account, it is considered that any impact on equality groups will be limited and the proposal
is justified.
