Wheelchair accessible taxis
We keep a register of vehicles that are suitable for wheelchair users. If you use one of these vehicles, the driver must help you travel safely, comfortably, and at no extra cost. These rules apply under the Equality Act 2010.
What drivers must do
Drivers of wheelchair accessible vehicles must:
- carry you in your wheelchair if you choose to stay in it
- not charge you any extra
- carry your wheelchair if you transfer to a seat
- make sure you travel safely and in reasonable comfort
- give you help when needed
What help includes
Drivers must give reasonable assistance, including:
- helping you get in and out of the vehicle
- helping you stay in your wheelchair during the journey, if you prefer
- loading and unloading luggage
- loading and unloading your wheelchair if you move to a seat

Driver exemptions
Some drivers may not be able to give physical assistance due to a medical condition or disability. These drivers can apply for an exemption.
If a driver does not have an exemption and does not meet their duties, they are committing an offence.
Apply for an exemption
To apply, you need:
- a completed exemption application form
- a letter from your doctor
