Supporting your community during an emergency
Emergencies affect people in different ways. Someone who usually manages well may struggle during severe weather, illness or a power cut. A quick check‑in can make a big difference.
Community support is about helping safely and within your abilities.
Ways you can help
You can:
- keep phone numbers for neighbours who may need support
- check in by phone or in person if it is safe
- help with shopping or picking up essentials
- clear snow or ice from footpaths where possible
- share trusted information with others
Always put your own safety first.
Volunteering in emergencies
If you want to do more, you can volunteer with established groups that support emergency services. These groups offer training and clear roles.
Examples include:
- British Red Cross
- Royal Voluntary Service
- 4x4 Response
- Scottish Ambulance Service's Community First Responders
Check which organisations operate in your area before applying.
Community emergency plans
A community emergency plan helps local people work together and share roles before something happens. It can include contact lists, meeting points and support for vulnerable residents.
Guides and templates are available on Ready Scotland.
