Industrial Retrofit Grant

The South Lanarkshire Industrial Retrofit Grant supports the retrofit of existing industrial buildings, enabling local businesses to enhance energy efficiency, functionality and environmental performance.

The grant supports projects that:

• use less energy
• reduce carbon emissions
• help businesses move towards net zero
• improve how industrial buildings work

How much money can I get?

You can get a grant of up to 50% of eligible project costs (VAT is not included).

• Minimum grant: £20,000
• Maximum grant: £50,000
• Minimum total project cost: £40,000
• Payment: after the project is finished and fully paid for
• Time limit: projects must be finished within 6 months

You must pay for the project first. The grant is claimed at the end.

What can the grant be used for?

The grant can be used for retrofit work in an existing industrial building.

This includes:

• energy‑efficient or low‑carbon machinery
• renewable energy systems, like solar panels
• electric or low‑carbon heating systems
• energy monitoring or digital control systems
• electrical upgrades
• insulation or building improvements

All equipment and building work must stay with the business for at least 3 years.

Who can apply?

You may be able to apply if your business:

• is based in South Lanarkshire
• works from industrial premises that you own
• is a small or medium‑sized business (SME)
• has a turnover above the VAT threshold
• is registered for Non‑Domestic Rates
• has completed a retrofit assessment through the SLC Expert Help programme
• has not started the project or spent any money yet

Who cannot apply?

You cannot apply if your business is:

• not yet trading
• below the VAT threshold
• renting or leasing the building
• a takeaway food business
• a motor trade business (such as garages or car washes)

The grant cannot be used for new‑build industrial buildings.

What cannot be funded?

The grant cannot support projects that:

• have already started
• cost less than £40,000, these can be supported via our Business Growth Grant
• reduce staff jobs
• use hire purchase, leasing or credit cards
• are only to meet legal requirements
• are for security systems like CCTV or alarms
