Adult learning opportunities in South Lanarkshire
We support adults across South Lanarkshire to take part in learning that helps build skills, confidence and independence. Our community‑based adult learning opportunities are designed to be welcoming, practical and accessible.
You can join learning in your local area, at a pace that suits you, whether you want to build confidence, develop everyday skills, or take a step towards work or further study.
Personal development courses
Our personal development courses help you build confidence and try new types of learning in a supportive environment.
Courses may include:
- personal computing and IT (beginner to intermediate)
- craft activities
- confidence building
- internet safety
- healthy cookery
- stress management
Accredited learning
Accredited learning is the next step if you are looking to gain recognised qualifications that can help you move into work or further education.
Courses may include:
- REHIS Food Handling Certificate
- Certificated first aid
- Introduction to counselling
- STEPS personal development programme
- Alternative therapies
These courses provide certificated learning designed to support progression and employability.

Adult learning (ALN and ESOL)
The Adult Literacy and Numeracy (ALN) Team and the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Team are part of the Youth, Family and Community Learning Service in South Lanarkshire.
Services are available across:
- Cambuslang and Rutherglen
- Larkhall and Hamilton
- East Kilbride
- Clydesdale
Who can take part
Learners aged 16 and over can join informal and relaxed groups in their local community.
You can:
- build confidence
- develop literacy and numeracy skills
- learn budgeting skills
- improve digital skills using smartphones, tablets or computers
Qualifications and learning opportunities
We offer a range of SQA Core Skills qualifications in:
- Communication
- Numeracy
- Information Technology (IT)
Courses are available up to Level 4 on the Scottish Qualifications Framework (SCQF).
What you can gain from adult learning
Our groups are designed to support a wide range of needs. You can join if you want to:
- develop employability skills
- learn to use online services (such as setting up an email or completing forms)
- support your child at school
- improve spelling, grammar, punctuation, reading and writing
- prepare for college or university
- access support if you have a learning difficulty
All learning opportunities are free of charge.
