Bins - what goes in them
What you can put in your black or green household waste bin
Your black or green bin is for waste that cannot be recycled. Please make sure the lid is fully closed on collection day. We cannot empty bins with open lids, excess waste or additional bins. If you have more waste than fits in your bin, you can take it to one of our household waste and recycling centres.
What goes in this bin
You can use your black or green bin for:
- plastic bags
- food packaging that can’t be recycled or is covered with food
- crisp and sweet wrappers
- polystyrene
- polythene
- drinks cartons such as Tetrapak
- cooking oil that has cooled and is sealed in a container
- paint tins with solidified paint (use a paint hardener or mix in sand or soil)
- pet bedding
- contents of your vacuum cleaner
Items that must not go in this bin
Gas bottles and canisters must never be placed in your black or green bin. These containers are compressed during treatment and can explode. Please return them to the supplier or take them to one of our six household waste and recycling centres.
If your bin has been tagged
If your bin has a tag, we will not empty it. You can read more about why your bin has been tagged.
