Turning underpasses into bright community artwork

Imagine walking through your local underpass and being greeted not by dull, forgotten walls - but by vibrant, meaningful artwork that reflects the spirit of your community. That’s exactly what this project is all about.

Led by Hamilton Universal Connections, in partnership with a local artist, this initiative brings young people and primary school pupils together to transform overlooked spaces into bold, creative murals.

Our plan

Through a series of workshops, young people will work alongside a professional artist to design and paint murals that brighten underpasses and celebrate local identity.

By taking part, they will:

  • develop creative and artistic skills
  • build confidence and teamwork abilities
  • gain valuable employability and leadership experience

This project provides a platform for young people to express themselves, take ownership, and create something meaningful that will be seen and enjoyed by the wider community.

The spaces

Our goal is simple but powerful: to turn tired, dark underpasses into colourful, welcoming places. These murals will help lift the atmosphere of everyday spaces and create a lasting visual impact for everyone who passes through.

Community consultations – we need you!

While the artwork will be created by young people, it’s important that it reflects our wider community.

We’ll be holding community consultation sessions from May through to the end of June (dates to be confirmed), giving residents the opportunity to:

  • share ideas and themes they’d like to see reflected
  • help shape the direction of the murals
  • stay informed about the project as it develops
