Changing schools during term-time

Changing schools during term-time

If you want to change your child’s school during term time, the steps you take depend on your situation. This includes whether you are moving home or choosing a different school.

Contact your current school or the new school as early as possible. We will guide you through the right process.

If you are moving house

If you move during the school term, your child can usually attend the catchment school for your new address.

You can check your catchment school using our online catchment area checker.

If you want your child to stay at their current school, you must complete a request to remain application.

  • school transport is not provided if your child stays at their current school
  • a copy of your application will be shared with the school and Education Resources

Your child’s secondary school is based on your home address, not their primary school. They will normally move to their catchment secondary school in the same denominational sector.

If you want a different secondary school, you must submit a placing request in Primary 7.

Requests to remain are not automatically approved for children attending an Additional Support Needs school or base. For advice, email educationinclusion@southlanarkshire.gov.uk.

If you want to change schools for another reason

If you want your child to attend a different school for any reason other than moving house, you must make a placing request.

Apply using the placing request form.

  • you will not receive school transport for a placing request
  • decisions can take up to 2 months
