Improving air quality in South Lanarkshire
Air quality in South Lanarkshire is generally good and continues to improve. However, some areas can experience higher levels of air pollution, particularly in areas affected by heavier levels of traffic. To address these concerns, three Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) were previously declared.
Revocation of the Whirlies Roundabout, East Kilbride Air Quality Management Area
Revocation of the Rutherglen Air Quality Management Area
Revocation of Lanark Air Quality Management Area
Monitoring has since shown significant improvements in air quality, and all three AQMAs have now been revoked.
The revocation of all three Air Quality Management Areas reflects the positive improvements made in air quality across South Lanarkshire. Building on this success, our Air Quality Action Plan 2024–2029 sets out how we will continue to protect and enhance local air quality, ensuring that these improvements are sustained for the benefit of our communities.
What the action plan covers
Improving air quality requires action at local, national and international levels. While advances in technology and environmental policies are helping to reduce emissions, increasing numbers of vehicles on our roads continue to create challenges.
The action plan outlines the measures we will take over the next five years to:
- improve air quality in identified hotspot areas
- reduce the impact of traffic-related pollution
- support healthier and more sustainable travel choices
- protect public health and the environment
- monitor and review air quality across South Lanarkshire
How you can help
Everyone can play a part in improving air quality. Small changes, such as walking, cycling, using public transport, or reducing unnecessary vehicle journeys, can help lower pollution levels.
