Contaminated land

How we check land and help keep people and places safe

We check land that may be affected by past industrial use to help protect people, property and the environment. If you are worried about a site or want to check whether land has been recorded as contaminated, you can contact us for advice or view the public register.

Some land in South Lanarkshire may contain harmful substances because of former activities such as mining, manufacturing or waste disposal. This is known as contaminated land. In some cases, it can pose a risk to health, buildings or the wider environment if it is not properly managed.

What we do

We inspect land where there may be a risk from contamination. We focus on sites that could affect people, water, or the natural environment. Where action is needed, we work under laws that protect public health and the environment.

We also keep a public register of land that has been formally identified as contaminated. This helps ensure things are open and transparent.

If you are planning a development

Many potentially contaminated sites are dealt with as part of the planning process. If you are a developer, agent or consultant, you may need to assess land and, if required, carry out further work before development starts.

We can provide guidance on what is expected and when checks are needed.

If you have a concern

You can contact us if you believe land may be contaminated, if you want to view the public register, or if you need advice before buying or developing land. We can explain what information is available and what steps you can take next.

Contact and further information

To request the public register, ask for guidance documents, or discuss a concern, contact Environmental services.
