Council Housing Allocation Policy

Move to a smaller council home

If you're a South Lanarkshire Council tenant living in a home that is larger than you need, we may be able to help you move to a smaller property through our Local Letting Initiative.

Moving to a smaller home can make day-to-day living easier and may help reduce household costs. The initiative also helps free up larger homes for families who need them.

Who can apply?

You may be eligible if you:

  • are a South Lanarkshire Council tenant with a Scottish Secure Tenancy
  • live in a property with three or more bedrooms
  • are willing to move to a one or two bedroom property
  • qualify for the smaller property under our Housing Allocation Policy
  • live in an area where larger council homes are in high demand
  • are flexible about the areas and property types you would consider
  • have maintained your tenancy responsibly

Support available

We can provide practical help and advice to tenants who move through the Local Letting Initiative. We can discuss your housing options and explain the rehousing process.
