Connect2 Renewables Employability Initiative

Case study - course fees and travel expenses

A teenager from Coalburn is now able to pursue her dream career in music thanks to funding support from the Connect2 Renewables Employability Initiative. Isla Macdonald, a former Lesmahagow High pupil, received help with both her course fees and travel costs so she could study in Glasgow.

Helping Isla access the right course

Isla secured a place on an HND Music Performance course at the Academy of Music and Sound. Although SAAS funded part of her studies, she faced losing the opportunity because she could not afford the remaining fees or the cost of travelling from her rural home.

A successful application to Connect2 Renewables changed that. The fund covered the outstanding balance of her course fees and provided ongoing support with travel, allowing her to attend the college that best meets her needs.

Building confidence and a future in music

The support has had a real impact. Isla is thriving in her coursework, gaining confidence in live performance and even working towards releasing her first single. Studying in a smaller, more supported environment has made a big difference for her.

In Isla’s own words:

“Having access to the funding has allowed me to attend the college that is best suited for me. I find larger classes and locations difficult, and my college is the perfect size to allow me to get all the help I need. The fund also helps me pay for travel from what is quite a remote area.

“I plan to finish my HND this year and continue at the Academy of Music and Sound to achieve my BA. I hope to be performing full‑time and making a living from something I love.”
